As the new year begins, so do the garden plans. It is not a simple task, and I definitely don't have a set system yet. There are lists, charts, post-it notes, bins, boxes and seed packets galore scattered on the dining room table. This year I am tackling some new to me flowers and seeds, along with my favorites. The research says you can start these new seeds indoors after January 1st! So you bet I grabbed those seeds and got to planting during the school closing snowstorm that swept over us a of couple weeks ago.
There is something about playing in the dirt while it is snowing outside, gives you hope for Spring. These little guys are getting their start in the house, as we still need to let some snow melt before I can move out to the greenhouse. The life of a grower is crazy, you need to time so much just right. When to start, when to transplant to larger pots, when to harden off, when to plant out, how much light, how much warmth, how much water...how to keep your dogs from taking a nibble... These are not easy tasks and most seedlings have different standards and protocols.
Just like people, flowers grow their own way. Some need more time, some need more nurturing, some need to just be left alone, but in the end, they are all beautiful and unique. The days are getting longer, my husband is getting home before dark and that is always a good sign that Spring is right around the corner, 55 days and counting.
